How can teaching hands-on biology in schools contribute to world peace? 🗝 When children and junior youth, together with their teachers, participate in and help to carry out activities needed for a garden, including design and structure, planting, nurturing, harvesting, and food processing, as well as monitoring ecosystems, specifically their function and services, they learn about natural ecosystems and nature cycles. 🗝By taking into account their practical implications for sustainable food, medicine, and non-food production in addition to other services provided by nature such as provisioning services [where ecosystems produce products such as food, raw material, fresh water, and medicine], regulating services [for climate control, clean water, and clean air], and cultural services [including aesthetic inspiration, cultural identity], they develop a sense of the planet as their home, and experience a spiritual connection to the natural environment.🗝They understand the strength and fragility of life, the work and processes needed for growth and the balance it requires. 🗝 These experiences can be extended to other areas of learning which are then understood within the context of human civilization in the natural world. #education #biodiversity #sdgs #biology

PPD1041: Academic Advisor (ACAD) ReflectionI met my Academic Advisor, Dr Hafsah binti Nahrawi, who is also my lecturer in Soil Science Subject, on 17th November, 2023 at Tutorial Room 7. During the intervention, I explained to Dr Hafsah that I am interested in learning plant science and seeked for career prospects in this field. My ACAD explained that, besides educators such as lectures and teachers, I could be a forest officers, working either at government or private sectors. Now, I understand that plant science programme has high demand in career prospects. I found out that the scope for plant science is very wide in term of jobs as plant science plays vital role in agriculture, food science, medicine, education, forestry, biodiversity protection and environmental conservation. Sadly, plants are still largely underappreciated.Next, my ACAD emphasised on how to manage my time as a student. She really encouraged me to have high position to build more connection, but still prioritise academic. I learned that academic performance is crucial in order to strive for job opportunities, but at the same time, do not neglect the soft skills. Lastly, I would like to highlight my experience meeting my ACAD. Dr Hafsah is the lecturer I would approach to, whenever I'm having difficulty in the future as she is very open-minded and easy-going person.

🎓 Today marked a significant milestone in my Ph.D. journey as I was honored to deliver my first lecture to Msc students in the environmental science program at Södertörn University. The topic was #Risk #assessment in the #drinking #water #supply bringing the #watergovernance perspective into the analyse. 💬 While I've always been at ease discussing my research, today's two-hour lecture posed a new challenge. Crafting a coherent thread of ideas and delivering key messages proved to be an art of its own.🧵 What truly made a difference was drawing from my case studies based on previous and current research. It was a moment of realization – "I know this quite well!" Confidence and happiness followed suit, and my face was warm.🌐 In reflecting on this experience, I illustrate the PhD journey as climbing a staircase. It may seem laborious at the beginning, but step by step, it unfolds. Today, nervousness and joy took place as I shared insights and inspired future researchers. They were eager to ask questions on the topic. It was such a good feeling!🤝 Acknowledging the value of developing thoughts coherently in academic discourse, I appreciate the nuanced skills displayed by fellow academics/ professors i once met in this journey! Gratitude goes to my professors at Universidade de Cabo Verde Eötvös Loránd University and IHE Delft Institute for Water Education for laying the foundation and inspiration.🪜 Today was the first step, and I eagerly anticipate many more opportunities to share my journey and knowledge with the academic community. #Unfortunately, I couldn't take a photo of this professional highlight, but the memory will linger. Onward and upward! #PhDLife #AcademicJourney #EnvironmentalScience #PublicSpeaking 🌱

Over the Summer of 2023, I researched access to environmental education (EE) as part of my senior capstone project for the Program on the Environment. I interned with Fiddleheads Forest School, where I worked first-hand with teachers and kids, learned about the core values of environmental education, and created curriculum kits. I conducted informational interviews with EE experts to understand the barriers to EE and potential solutions to increase access. I completed a literature review to fill in the remaining gaps in knowledge regarding access to EE. Specifically, I gathered information about underrepresented groups' participation and experiences with EE. I found 7 barriers to environmental education and proposed 6 solutions in response. Below is my research poster. I will follow up with a post about my final deliverable (the nature-themed busy box).

Happy to share that the first paper of my PhD on "Competencies in higher education: identifying and selecting important competencies based on graduates & professionals in food technology"has been published in European Journal of Engineering Education! In this study, we identified competencies of importance in food technology that should get more attention in education. The list of competencies and method for selecting competencies shows potential to be used in other studies and disciplines.Find out more through this link: https://lnkd.in/epvAKuesThanks to everyone who participated in this study and to my supervisors Julia Diederen, Carla Buijsse, Remko Boom & Perry den Brok.

What are different ways society and science experience soil? In the next session of the Transdisciplinary Lunch Crowd, Giulia Bongiorno, Wietse Wiersma, and Dienke Stomph will share how they created an interactive event at the Wageningen Soil Conference to explore diverse sensory connections people have with soil. What: lunch knowledge sharing event (bring your own lunch)When: December 12th, 12:30-13:30Where: In person Forum P0635and online (send a message if you would like to join online)Background idea:How do soil scientists perceive and experience soils? They use a wide variety of devices and tools, such as microscopes, laboratory equipment and field campaigns, and they summarize their knowledge through publications, graphs, and tables. Approaching soils with this academic perspective is likely to cause scientists to have different relationships with soils than people without soil science training. Humans have relationships with soils, and in addition to the science-based ones, these relationships can be personal, artistic, cultural, sensorial etc... What we proposed during the Wageningen Soil Conference was to let soil scientists (the main participants of the conference) discover the diversity in ways that soils can be experienced and perceived. After three intensive days mainly talking about soil science, during this event we took participants beyond the scientific perspective in an informal and relaxed space where we engaged with soils in unexpected and creative ways. Seventeen ‘stations’ were dedicated to experiencing colors, smells, tastes, textures, sounds, visuals, emotions and feelings peculiar to soils. Each station was organized by either a scientist or an artist that was present to encourage discussions, conversations and sharing of stories to inspire to experience new soil perspectives. One of the goals of this exercise was to expand the, often narrow, view of soil scientists on soils and let them discover other dimensions which can allow them to better connect with society and inspire them to share their work and knowledge about soil.#transdisciplinary #interdisciplinary #transdisciplinarylunchcrowd #knowledgesharing #societyscience #soilconference #experiencingsoilperspectives #wimek #wur

Science can be side-lined in primary, but I had no idea that just 21% of pupils met expected standards in the more recent key stage 2 (KS2) science sample assessment, with disadvantaged pupils falling behind their peers. The main author of today's Improving Primary Science guidance report, the brilliant Katie Luxton in my team, discovered during her research that this greatly contrasts with teacher assessed grades, where 82% of pupils met expectations.Whilst we can’t be sure of the reason for this difference, what we can be certain of is that supporting high-quality science teaching benefits all pupils - particularly those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds – and the Improving Primary Science Guidance Report is a good place to start. The practical guidance aims to support teachers and leaders to develop their classroom science teaching. Much of this guidance could be implemented by teachers without intensive PD, but sometimes external support is welcome. We're continuing to evaluate programmatic, CPD-based solutions to improve science teaching in primary too: Thinking, Doing, Talking Science and Focus4TAPS are both currently undergoing large effectiveness trials and watch this space for more.
