Packed Crowds Sing Along To Lana Del Rey, Chance The Rapper Makes Appearance At Lolla Sunday (2024)

GRANT PARK — A sold-out crowd celebrated the final day of Lollapalooza Sunday, packing the area near stages of acts including Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lana Del Rey and Lil Yachty.

“There’s a lot of y’all mother-f—–s” out here,” said Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ before bringing out hometown hero Chance The Rapper, who made his crowds swell even larger.

The wet weather was still a factor Sunday as light rains carried over and kept the mud alive on the grounds, caking the shoes and clothes of fans who didn’t seem to care. Rains also dampened the fest grounds Saturday.

Gabriel Sanchez-Burks, an 18-year-old from Ann Arbor, took his first dive on a Lollapalooza tradition: Mud people.

“I saw the mudslide and thought, ‘why not?’” Sanchez-Burks said. “Lolla is a slip and slide. I’ve been going to Lolla since my parents did it, and now it’s my turn.”

The fourth and final day of the fest saw crowds pick up following the rains, which drew a young crowd for Lana Del Rey and an older crowd for fellow headliners Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Del Rey came out in an all-white summer dress, adorned by ballerinas in all-black as the massive crowd crooned “Young and Beautiful” with her. Del Rey sat in front of a picture frame and flowers as someone adorned her hair with butterflies and dancers held candles.

Towards the end of her set, Del Rey ventured in the front stands in heart-shaped red sunglasses, taking selfies and accepting flowers from young fans.

“Thank you all for showing up,” said Del Rey, as she walked cautiously back on stage. “I’m not going to blame this on the mud.”

Bright colors, Michael Jordan jerseys and medics rushing stretchers were hard to miss anywhere across the festival.

Max Waldman, from Regina in the Saskatchewan region in Canada, wore his No. 23 jersey for his first time in Chicago.

“Just felt fitting,” Waldman said. “This is an excellent city, a metropolitan utopia.”

Rock Crowd Shows Out For Chili Peppers

Lollapalooza staple Red Hot Chili Peppers headlined the T Mobile stage, drawing a large crowd from across the country to the southern end of Grant Park.

The famed Los Angeles band served as this year’s legacy rock act to close out the fest, drawing on recent precedent of having Green Day (2022) and Foo Fighters (2021) serve as the final night main stage act.

The band performed a Sunday night show 31 years after its first Lollapalooza appearance in 1992. Red Hot Chili Peppers have also headlined the fest in 2006, 2012 and 2016 as well as gigs at Lollapalooza’s editions in Argentina and Brazil.

“There’s some serious baby boomers up there,” said Tye, a Red Hot Chili Peppers fan from Denver. “And they’re already up by the stage.”

Chicagoan Lisa Marie Chagas said she came to Lollapalooza for the first time to catch the Chili Peppers. She had no trouble braving the crowd of teenagers darting across the festival in basketball jerseys.

“I had to be a part of this at least once before I die,” Chagas said. “And everyone has been very polite and organized. If they step on my foot they say ‘sorry.’”

RapperJoey Bada$$ let his early afternoon fans know he had a “friend from Chicago” he wanted to bring on as Chance The Rapper crashed his stage and people rushed over.

The Chicago native performed his 2016 hit “No Problem” and “Highs & The Lows,” his collaboration with Joey Bada$$. It was the first time the song had been performed live.

“If you really from Chicago make some noise,” Chance told the crowd.

Another hometown hero — Humboldt Park lagoon alligator Chance The Snapper — was referenced at Lolla. Lincoln Park spot Chicago’s Dog House was slinging a “Chance The Snapper” dog that included alligator sausage and chili sauce for $14.
